Staircase replacement

Group Metropolitan has successfully delivered a high-specification staircase refurbishment at 1 Wood Street, London. The £350,000 project was delivered over a four-week programme on levels 6 and 7, within a seven-floor modern office building in the St Paul’s area.

The project included bespoke joinery, paneling, decoration and a curved handrail solution, with the design and installation carefully adapted to accommodate variations within the existing staircase substructure.

The project was developed from a visual concept supplied by the client, with Group Metropolitan’s expertise translating the design intent into a practical, high-quality installation.

One of the key challenges was developing a new handrail finish that would provide the required high-quality appearance while also being robust and hard-wearing for a high-traffic internal staircase.

The handrail also needed to follow the existing curved geometry of the spiral staircase. Group Metropolitan worked closely with the delivery team and joinery contractor to develop a bespoke solution capable of being moulded to the required curve.

During the installation phase, the existing staircase substructure was found to differ from the original survey information. This created a challenge for the installation of the new paneling, as the designed components needed to accommodate variations within the existing structure while maintaining the intended visual finish.

Group Metropolitan worked closely with Forest Joinery to review the existing conditions and redesign elements of the installation accordingly. This approach allowed the joinery and paneling to be adapted, while enabling works to continue without delaying the overall programme.

The completed project delivered the required high-specification finish exactly to the client’s vision, demonstrating Group Metropolitan’s ability to manage detailed, design-led refurbishment works within an existing commercial office environment.
