Process
The project involved replacing the two deteriorating tanks with a single, modern fire water tank while ensuring all systems remained operational throughout. A significant challenge arose when one of the existing tanks suffered a critical failure during the construction period. GML deployed temporary water tankers to the site, maintaining emergency coverage for the estate and, importantly, a nearby Grade II listed building.
Due to the size and placement of the new tank, a new foundation solution was necessary, resulting in the design and implementation of a bored pile foundation. The environment and ecological sensitivity required detailed planning requirements, ecological assessments, arboricultural control measures, bio-diversity net gain assessments, construction control measures associated with tree root protection and protected species, including bats, badgers and great crested newts!
The client commended Group Metropolitan’s efforts, stating: “Very well done to ALL involved with this project, that’s a long outstanding risk for site that has been removed, great effort and delivery in getting this one over the line.”
Another comment from the site lead added: “Thank you Adam and to everyone involved on the project. A really important deliverable for the integrity of the campus but one we hope we never need to use!”
