Charlie Loten - New Apprentice Interview
“Choosing an apprenticeship was a clear decision for me”, states Charlie Loten, who only started his apprenticeship at Group Metropolitan one month ago. Having always preferred learning by doing, Charlie felt that an apprenticeship would be far more valuable for him than spending years in a classroom. While university or college offers a more traditional academic route, Charlie’s strengths were better suited to a path that developed practical skills, “a hands-on approach is not only more engaging, but also a more efficient way for me to gain real-world experience while earning a qualification.”
“This apprenticeship is a crucial step towards a long-term goal, supporting me with the experience, knowledge and progression required to achieve my goal of becoming a fully qualified Electrician.” Providing the technical foundation, industry knowledge, and professional development, Group Metropolitan is teaching and supporting the next generation to progress in their field.
Throughout the apprenticeship, Charlie aims to develop a “strong set of technical skills, eventually specialising in electrical installation, testing, fault finding, and maintenance.” But it’s not just about the hands-on approach, he is also learning how to “work effectively as part of a team, communicate clearly, and stay safety-conscious in high-risk environments.”

Why Group Metropolitan
Charlie’s journey with Group Metropolitan began through a personal connection, “my older brother, Alfie, currently works as an Electrician within the company and he also completed his own apprenticeship here”. His brother speaking highly of the experience gave Charlie a firsthand look at the support and opportunities Group Metropolitan offers.
“I chose Group Metropolitan because of its strong reputation for supporting and nurturing apprentices The company is well known for investing in its people, offering clear progression routes, and creating an environment where learning and development are genuinely prioritised.”
“What stands out most to me about the company is the quality and standard of work across all projects.” GML has a commitment to excellence, and that is also reflected in the mentorship and guidance provided to apprentices. Another attraction for Charlie was the “variety of projects we get to work on. It means I’m constantly exposed to different electrical systems and work environments, which keeps things interesting and helps me develop a broad skill set.”
“The training and mentoring I’ve received so far have been excellent.” Approachable mentors are a huge element to Group Metropolitan’s apprenticeship scheme, making sure they encourage questions and take the time to explain both the practical and theoretical aspects of the job.”
The Future
Apprenticeships are a vital stepping stone towards someone's future, whether in the same industry you trained, or not. For Charlie, “This apprenticeship will give me the experience and qualifications to build a long-term career in the electrical industry.” Working on-site has already exposed him to the realities of the job, giving a broader perspective on the industry as a whole. “Meeting and speaking to new and different people can open your eyes to the many pathways available beyond the core electrical work.”
“Looking ahead, I’m particularly excited to explore areas like design and project management,” which is exactly what Group Metropolitans apprenticeships are designed for – allowing individuals to explore multiple trades, avenues and interests to help support and build their career.
